What is gyroscopic stability factor (Sg)?

Sg compares the spin a bullet actually has to the spin it needs to stay nose-forward against the air trying to tumble it. Below 1.0 the bullet is unstable. Between 1.0 and 1.4 it flies but pays for it in drag and precision. At 1.5 and above it is properly stable, which is the figure most bullet makers design around.

What twist rate do I need for a 77 grain .224 bullet?

Around 1:8 for a typical 77 grain match bullet at normal velocities, and 1:7 if you want margin in cold, dense air or plan to go heavier later. Enter the actual bullet length above rather than trusting weight alone, because length drives stability far more than mass does.

Does a faster twist hurt accuracy?

Not meaningfully for most shooters. Very high Sg values add a little spin drift and slightly amplify any bullet imbalance, and extreme cases can pull thin jackets apart. A faster twist than you strictly need is usually the safer choice because it leaves room for heavier bullets.

Why does velocity and air density change stability?

Faster bullets spin faster for the same twist, so muzzle velocity raises Sg slightly. Air density matters more: cold, dense, sea-level air pushes harder on the nose, so a load that is marginal at 1.05 in the summer heat can drop below 1.0 on a freezing morning. That is why 1.5 is the target, not 1.0.

Where do I find my bullet's length?

Most manufacturers publish overall bullet length in their reloading data, and otherwise a caliper reading of a single bullet is accurate enough. This calculator uses the Miller twist rule, which needs length, diameter and weight to give a meaningful answer.

Why twist rate decides which bullets your rifle can shoot

A bullet in flight is trying to tumble. Air pressure on the nose creates a force that wants to flip it end over end, and the only thing preventing that is the spin the rifling gave it. Twist rate sets how much spin the bullet leaves with, so it sets which bullets your barrel can actually stabilize.

Length is the driver, not weight. Long, sleek, high-BC bullets are harder to stabilize than short stubby ones of the same mass, which is why two bullets of identical weight can have very different twist requirements. The Miller rule used here accounts for that directly, which is why every figure on this page is calculated from bullet length rather than looked up from weight alone.

Aim for a stability factor of 1.5 or better rather than merely clearing 1.0. Stability falls as air gets colder and denser and as velocity drops with a shorter barrel or a milder load, so a load that is marginal on a warm range day can go genuinely unstable on a cold morning.
