How many MOA are in a MIL?

One milliradian equals 3.43775 MOA, so a 0.1 MIL click moves your impact about 0.344 MOA. Going the other way, 1 MOA is 0.2909 MIL. Those ratios are fixed and never change with distance — only the inch value on target does.

Is 1 MOA exactly 1 inch at 100 yards?

No, and the difference matters at distance. True MOA is 1.047 inches per 100 yards. Some shooters round it to 1 inch, which is called Shooter's MOA or IPHY. At 100 yards the error is under half an inch, but at 1,000 yards a 10 MOA correction is off by nearly 5 inches.

How do I work out scope clicks from a miss?

Measure how far the shot landed from center in inches, enter it above with your target distance, and read the click count for your turret. A 1/4 MOA turret needs four clicks per MOA, and a 0.1 MIL turret needs ten clicks per MIL.

Should I shoot MOA or MIL?

Neither is more accurate. MIL is a decimal system that is faster for holdovers and for talking corrections with a spotter, which is why most precision rifle competitors use it. MOA lines up more naturally with inches and yards. The important thing is that your turret and your reticle use the same unit.

Why do my clicks not match the correction I dialed?

Usually the turret is not tracking truly, or the reticle and turret units differ. Shoot a tall-target test to verify your scope moves what it claims, then use the measured value. MOA and MIL, without the confusion

Both units are angles, not lengths. That is the whole idea: an angular correction works at every distance, so 2 MOA of elevation is 2 MOA whether the target is at 200 yards or 900. What changes is how much ground that angle covers when it reaches the target.

A minute of angle is one sixtieth of a degree, which works out to 1.047 inches per 100 yards. A milliradian is one thousandth of a radian, which covers 3.6 inches per 100 yards, or a tidy 10 cm at 100 metres. That metric neatness is why MIL took over in precision rifle circles.

The practical mistake is mixing systems. A MIL reticle on a MOA turret means every hold you read has to be converted before you dial it, which is exactly the sort of arithmetic that goes wrong under a timer. Match the reticle to the turret and the problem disappears.
